History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few. In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers.  Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This 1984 Land Rover is a very original example having been registered later in Pisa, Italy in 1986; a common occurrence for exports model defenders. The vehicle is an export built 90 from the Solihull England factory. It was purchased from the original owner via Land Rover’s Italian main dealer network, after the owner decided to trade in the vehicle  for one of Land Rover’s Discovery Sport models.

The car comes unregistered with Italian export title for registration in purchases country. All UK VAT and duty obligations have been met and can register with a UK V5C at buyer’s request.

The interior presents fantastically for a car this year. It should be noted that the drivers seat has been reupholstered and there is minimal cracking on the dashboard.  The vehicle comes with original front floor mats and a replacement Land Rover original rear floor. The rear luggage area has received a repaint in the factory colour however there are some blemishes, but overall presents well.

The exterior of the car is in very complete condition, the wheel arches have been painted by the previous owner in a matching pale grey and look very presentable.  The paint is mostly original with the exception of a few areas that have been touched up in the original colour. Underneath presents fantastically and there is evidence that the previous owner did periodically under seal the car for rust protection and the rear cross member has also been recently refinished.

Overall the vehicle presents with a fantastic period patina with the original country specification  decals. It could just as easily be left as is and enjoyed or painted depending on your preference, mine would be the former!

The glass presents well with no chips or cracks to the front windscreen or any notable damage to other windows. The majority of window rubbers and seals are in good condition with the exception of the front windscreen seal which is showing signs of perishing and cracks, not unusual for our Land Rover residing in a warm climate.

This particular model is fitted with Land Rover original 16 inch steel wheels. Note that these are not the common export specification ro-styles wheels often seen on continental Land Rovers. These are wrapped in a set of good condition Michelin 4x4 road tyres with a non-matching spare. It should also be noted that this Italian specification has the dual bonnet and rear door wheel holders.

The engine bay houses a 12J 2.5D diesel inline 4 engine - one of the strongest units produced. The vehicle is also equipped with optional power steering.

Gear Box

Fitted with the LT 77 five-speed manual gearbox - a recently refurbished unit that changes freely in all gears.
