History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few.  In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This 1991 Land Rover Defender 110 200TDI was originally delivered to Spain, and first registered on 1st August 1991 to Land Rover Madrid S.A, it is a three-owner vehicle, the first owner had the truck until the end of 1994, then a further owner until mid 1995. Since 1995 it has had the same owner. In summary, it is a highly original truck and very usable; however, it needs light refurbishment. It represents a great project with a few jobs needed to make her great once more.

PAPERWORK

The vehicle is accompanied with its original Rover Spanish Tarjeta technical inspection logbook that documents the cars technical specification. This is complete with every state technical safety inspection from its first test year in 1995 up until July 2020. The car recently passed its latest technical inspection ITV in Spain in July 2020 and is in fully compliant roadworthy state until its next inspection in July 2021. Although many will think the vehicle's mileage is monumental, it's certainly nice touch to purchase a vehicle with historical records dating annually for 30 years and represents regular use of just under 10,000 miles per year.

The history file is also accompanied with a Spanish state history report, this gives a digital record of mileages, along with any change of ownership that would've occurred. The vehicle also comes with an English translated clean Spanish Carfax report upon request.

CONDITION

INTERIOR

There are 2 front seats covered in original moorland cloth and accompanied by a black vinyl centre console, the foam padding in the seats could do with renewal, I would personally keep the originality and just change the internal padding. Behind the front seats are two benches the whole way back, providing further seating. Uniquely for Spain the vehicle actually has legal homologation to carry 9 individuals this can be seen on the Tarjeta, denoted by wording 2/9 No. de asientos.

There are several areas with small rust patches, in the passenger side door there is a small hole in the underside, which can be easily welded with a repair section. Also, the floor under the driver’s side floor panel should be replaced. These are all readily available parts that don’t cost the earth. We are always happy to share our knowledge and help any potential buyer with sourcing the required parts.

EXTERIOR & PAINT

The majority of the panels are good and straight. Overall the vehicle carries a substantial amount of original paint. There are areas that have been painted over the years. There is some paint cracking at the front of the bonnet where it meets the outer front wing. The driver’s door looks to of been replaced at some point for a newer unit. The roof is in very good condition with minimal dents or damage. The truck would benefit from a new outrigger and rear cross member as the current have degraded.

GLASS

All windows and windshield are chip free and intact. To include original heated rear window. I believe this would've been a factory accessory in 1991.

WHEELS

The vehicle is fitted with a set of Spanish homologated white steel wheels. The rear tailgate mounted spare wheel has been removed. We are able to fit a wheel carrier at an additional cost if desired by the buyer.

MECHANICAL

The car is in good working order, however would benefit from a good going through by a mechanic to tighten up several areas. The engine, steering and the brakes are all in good working order. The suspension has become slightly soft over the years and could benefit from renewal. Both battery boxes are in a great condition and so is the chassis and running gear, with no rust or corrosion to report.

ENGINE

The engine is a factory 200Tdi 11L model. They were produced from 1990-1994 and although the 300 TDI is more refined, and an advanced iteration, it carries less power than the 200 TDI. Making a 200 TDI a great model that shouldn't be overlooked. Servicing and maintenance is very alike the 300TDI. The 200 TDI was also extensively used, Not only on the Defender but in the Range Rover Classic and Discovery range. Thus, making knowledge, expertise and parts readily available.

GEAR BOX

The LT77 Gearbox runs and shifts easily, with high and low diff locks working fine.

MAINTENANCE OVERVIEW

It's most recent service was earlier this year. This included an oil change and replacing oil, fuel and air filters. Along with servicing and cleaning the fuel pump.

AN UPDATE FROM THE TEAM

We are here and open for business

These are truly extraordinary times. Although we’re not as raring to go as usual, we still remain open, with shipping line's continuing to run, although at a reduced frequency.

  Keeping our distance

Fortunately we are a small team and geographically spread. The team are largely working from home with the exception of our independent mechanics who are able to continue to work safely.

What does this mean for YOU

We continue to operate and send out vehicles globally on a monthly basis. Our ability to prepare a vehicle to a client's specification is somewhat stifled. Although our mechanics are doing their very best, to meet smaller requests.

  Fast Moving Cars

 AKA lockdown project.

We’ve been working hard over recent months to gather a collection of "FAST MOVING CARS". These are rolling projects, although not perfect, they are ideal for first time importers giving a taste of what English classics have to offer.

  Fighting fit in no time

We are confident that we will come through this stronger and we wish safety and good health to everyone and their families.

We are only a call, email or text away so please don’t hesitate.
