History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured and produced under licence by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, to include Australia, Southern and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan and Malaysia, to name just a few.  In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

The Car

This fabulous 1991 Defender 90 short wheel base 200 TDI was delivered as an Italian market vehicle. The vehicle first resided near San Marino on the Adriatic where it remained for the majority of its life, under its first owner. After its time here, it later moved to Prata Camportaccio, Northern Italy, near Lake Como. It is believed that the truck has been owned by a total of two keepers over its 29-year lifespan.

One for the traditionalist. It presents in near factory original specification, except for some tasteful NAS spec inspired modifications, these include freestyle alloy wheels, and a period A frame bulbar. Being finished in Portofino Red with an off-white roof, the vehicle has a real EURO – NAS fusion about it. At this time of year, it’s hard to put your finger on but it just looks right. It’s hard to believe this car spent 29 years on the Italian coast when its clearly been screaming out to give Santa a helping hand over this festive period.

The exterior presents exceptionally well with recently polished paintwork. All the plastics surrounding the exterior are in great condition and haven’t deteriorated, as is common when exposed to strong sunlight. The spare wheel is mounted to the rear door and the bonnet wheel mount has been removed, although the original talion market spec mount is accompanied with the sale.

The exterior body work has been very well looked after and presents well.

NAS (North-American Specification) Freestyle wheels are shod with relatively new Hankook Dynapro AT M 205/80R16 tyres. The spare wheel looks to be a factory original Michelin which is now showing signs of cracking. Overall, a lot of tread left on the tyres all round.

The vehicle has grey vinyl interior and manual sunroof accompanied with new black centre cubby box. The rear of the defender also benefits from grey vinyl seating.

The original 4 spoke “Land Rover” steering wheel is fitted and with minimum wear and tear.

The defender runs very well with the 2.5 200 TDI injected diesel engine, it starts with ease and has plenty of pull heading out onto the motorway. Must be mentioned it is also comparatively smooth and quiet when left idling.

The gear box is good, the truck freely changes in and out of all gears including reverse, additionally the clutch feels low and responsive.

The structural integrity of this example is excellent, the car was imported from Italy. The chassis is solid with no signs of corrosion. The defender has benefitted from an anti-corrosion treatment to the ladder chassis. The foot wells again show no signs of rust and are solid throughout.

We are here and open for business

These are truly extraordinary times. Although we’re not as raring to go as usual, we still remain open, with shipping line's continuing to run, although at a reduced frequency.

  Keeping our distance

Fortunately we are a small team and geographically spread. The team are largely working from home with the exception of our independent mechanics who are able to continue to work safely.

What does this mean for YOU

We continue to operate and send out vehicles globally on a monthly basis. Our ability to prepare a vehicle to a client's specification is somewhat stifled. Although our mechanics are doing their very best, to meet smaller requests.

  Fast Moving Cars

 AKA lockdown project.

We’ve been working hard over recent months to gather a collection of "FAST MOVING CARS". These are rolling projects, although not perfect, they are ideal for first time importers giving a taste of what English classics have to offer.

  Fighting fit in no time

We are confident that we will come through this stronger and we wish safety and good health to everyone and their families.

We are only a call, email or text away so please don’t hesitate.
