History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had a unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured, and produced under license by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, including Australia, Southern, and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, and Malaysia, to name just a few.  In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

THE CAR

A last year production 300 TDI Defender 110. The vehicle is estimated to have been built in September 1997 and was first registered in Oslo Norway on the 18th of February 1998. A rare opportunity for anyone that admires these 300 TDI-era Defenders. It’s not often that we bring to market a period 300 TDI Land Rover Defender with such a comprehensive history file like this one. All in all, there are over 100 pages of repair and servicing invoices and paperwork to substantiate the vehicle's mileage and maintenance history. Accompanying the vehicle is the original sales invoice from Land Rover, Rover, BMW franchise dealer Egil Stenshagen Bil a.s of Olso for the purchase price of 255,000 Norwegian Krone equivalent to around €23,000 Euros. The vehicle also has its Land Rover dealer service stamp book which comprises 24 service stamps up until 2009. Thereafter there is a selection of invoices from Land Rover specialists for maintenance and servicing up until around 2016 when the vehicle is then dry stored.

The vehicle runs and drives however would need recommissioning to be used regularly or subjected to restoration. There is some corrosion to the rear cross member, and it would benefit from being replaced in the near future. There are a few older repairs to the chassis which would benefit from being repaired to a higher standard. Overall the chassis is very solid and would pass an inspection with little work. There are some minor leaks coming from the engine and gearbox, however, it runs and drives and the gearbox selects all gears perfectly.

The vehicle is being offered in “as is” condition, however, we can discuss restoring and or recommissioning the vehicle for any interested buyers.
