History of the Land Rover

The Land Rover Series range was launched in 1948 and the model, now known as the Defender, was launched in 1983 and the continuous run finished in January 2016, after 67 years. Land Rovers were inspired by the US-built Willys Jeep immediately after the war and by 1992 they claimed that 70% of all the vehicles they had ever built were still in use. The Defender and Series ranges have had a unique international presence throughout the production run, having been exported, manufactured, and produced under license by a number of other manufacturers in a variety of markets, including Australia, Southern, and North Africa, Turkey, Brazil, Pakistan, and Malaysia, to name just a few.  In 1993 Land Rover decided to take the plunge into the US market after their successful launch of the Range Rover brand in 1987 in order to offer an upmarket alternative to the Jeep Wrangler targeted at adventurous buyers. Land Rover finally had to retract their offering from the North American and Canadian markets in 1997 due to economic viability. The Defenders offered in the US during the 90’s had to be significantly modified in comparison to Land Rover’s other export markets. Subsequent federal safety regulation amendments finally withdrew the Defender from the US market entirely in 1997, with Land Rover throwing their attention towards upmarket Discovery and Range Rover models that were being built from the ground up.

THE CAR

This 1994 Land Rover Defender 90 300TDI is a 1995 model year vehicle thus represents a mid-series production 300 TDI. Possibly a sweet spot in 300 TDI production. This particular model also benefits from being a “without EGR” valve model from factory. The vehicle was originally dispatched from Land Rover Solihull-based “SPECIAL VEHICLES” operation. The SV tag plate is still present within the engine bay marked with a date of dispatch of 28/4/94. During this period of production, SV was responsible for special vehicle orders, which could range from, Diplomatic, Royal, or Fleet requirements. This particular vehicle was ordered by the Polish State Fire Service known in Polish as Państwowa Straż Pożarna, PSP. This vehicle is very fortunate to retain its complete fire service specification. It was discharged from the services on 20/07/2009 and since then has been privately owned by one single owner. Effectively a single-owner vehicle without counting the fire service. The Defender was originally delivered from the factory in Coniston Green, which is still visible in the engine bay and under interior matting. It’s presumed that the Straz red, sirens, lights, and radio were all fitted by the fire services when it came into service in late 1994. Uniquely sirens, lights, and radio all still function. The vehicle benefits from documented periodic technical examinations performed annually from 2011 to 2022 and is currently roadworthy. The vehicle currently has 126,382 Miles on the speedometer of which 1,424 miles have been added since 2011.

The vehicle offers quite an exceptional opportunity to acquire a well-documented, low mileage and low ownership Defender 90. We have no servicing records which unfortunately is not uncommon for ex-service vehicles. However, these service vehicles are known to be rigorously maintained on a timely basis regardless of mileage.

In conclusion a great vehicle for either a collector looking for something a little unique to preserve or for buyers looking for a cosmetic restoration project. Due to the Defender being delivered in a very desirable Coniston green color scheme. It would make for a very straightforward cosmetic restoration to restore back to its pre-fire service configuration. If any buyers would like to discuss any restoration work feel free to reach out and we can guide you through options. The vehicle will be sold fully serviced and inspected with any due maintenance performed. For any questions, please call or text +19049906967.
