HISTORY OF THE RANGE ROVER

The late 1960’s saw the emergence of the recreational off-road market led Land Rover to come up with a radically new competitor to the Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco. Land Rover passed on this challenge to Charles Spencer King, under the project title of “The 100 inch Station Wagon”.

It all started when Rover bought a Bronco and noticed the coiled suspension, this boosted the luxury element as gave improved performance and comfort. He also noted the powerful Buick V8. However, Mr. King gave the Range Rover several unique capabilities, improved carburettors that still fed fuel at extreme angles and the infamous started handle for emergencies.

It was launched in 1970 as “a car for all reasons”. The Range Rover was also the first permanent 4x4 to do over 100mph whilst having a towing capacity of 3.5 metric tons, accommodation for five, hydraulic disc brakes to all wheels and the groundbreaking dual-range, permanent four-wheel drive gearbox.

A four door version was introduced in 1981, with the two door version phased out in 1994, it was then named the ‘Classic’ to differentiate from the all new P38a Range Rover.

THE CAR

This 1989 Range Rover 2 Door was delivered by Austin Rover Espana S.A to Madrid and first registered there on 18/05/1989. The last change of ownership took place on 06/05/2002. The overall condition benefits from low ownership with only 3 owners since 1989. The Range Rovers, has a delightful original interior that presents with little wear, original factory paint work, and a host of recent revisions to include new turbo and starter motor.

CONDITION

EXTERIOR

Overall, the bodywork is extremely original. Are a smaller scuffs and scratches however no large dents in any of the body panels. The panel gaps are well aligned and it's evident the vehicle has never been apart. There is one notable dent in the centre of the bonnet,  along with some thinning of the paint in places such as the roof and bonnet scuttle. This is a lovely survivor vehicle, and I would encourage the future owner to preserve and cherish it's originality. The car benefits from recently replaced bumper corners along with the accompanying fixings.

PAINT

The Range Rover carries its original paint, and there's no notable evidence of any body work.

WHEELS

The car has a full set of 5 ‘Rostyle’ wheels showing some signs of age. However, they look to be carrying their original satin finish. Minor marks are present. The vehicle completes with matching tyres across the axles, with a spare in the boot. All in Usable condition however will need replacing in the near future.

INTERIOR

The front seats are in fabulous condition with firm bolsters, base and back rest sections. Moving to the rear the bench is in very good condition. The partial shelf is importantly still with the vehicle, which all too often gets misplaced.

The door cards are slightly tired with marks and some cracking to the under section nearest to the window. There is also one cracked palomino plastic panels to the rear right roof pillar. The dashboard however presents in very fine condition along with the centre console which is unusually strong and rigid, compared with other examples we've seen. A small but important part given the rarity of centre consoles.

STEERING WHEEL

The car features the original Range Rover Land Rover two spoke steering wheel which in good condition and is indicative of the mileage covered.

MECHANICAL

ENGINE

The engine runs really well for a 2.4 VM with adequate power. The vehicle has recently received a full engine service to include fuel air and oil filters filters  along with an oil change. Furthermore the vehicle has received a fully rebuilt OEM BorgWarner Turbo along with a new replacement starter motor.

GEAR BOX

The Range Rover has the 5-speed manual box with reverse and all the gears change freely without interference. There is no crunching from any synchromesh including reverse.

STRUCTURAL

The chassis is excellent. With only the mildest of exposed surface corrosion in areas. It's evident the vehicles have never been undersealed. There is also no penetrated corrosion on the floors or footwells.

DOCUMENTATION

The car has its Spanish technical inspection logbook that documents the car’s technical specification. It's most recent ITV inspection was passed on 06/04/2019. It passed a British MOT inspection in March of 2020.

AN UPDATE FROM THE TEAM

We are here and open for business

These are truly extraordinary times. Although we’re not as raring to go as usual, we still remain open, with shipping line's continuing to run, although at a reduced frequency.

  Keeping our distance

Fortunately we are a small team and geographically spread. The team are largely working from home with the exception of our independent mechanics who are able to continue to work safely.

What does this mean for YOU

We continue to operate and send out vehicles globally on a monthly basis. Our ability to prepare a vehicle to a client's specification is somewhat stifled. Although our mechanics are doing their very best, to meet smaller requests.

  Fast Moving Cars

 AKA lockdown project.

We’ve been working hard over recent months to gather a collection of "FAST MOVING CARS". These are rolling projects, although not perfect, they are ideal for first time importers giving a taste of what English classics have to offer.

  Fighting fit in no time

We are confident that we will come through this stronger and we wish safety and good health to everyone and their families.

We are only a call, email or text away so please don’t hesitate.
