History of the Range Rover

The late 1960’s saw the emergence of the recreational off-road market led Land Rover to come up with a radically new competitor to the Jeep Wagoneer and the Ford Bronco. Land Rover passed on this challenge to Charles Spencer King, under the project title of “The 100 inch Station Wagon”.

It all started when Rover bought a Bronco and noticed the coiled suspension, this boosted the luxury element as it gave improved performance and comfort. He also noted the powerful Buick V8. However, Mr. King gave the Range Rover several unique capabilities, improved carburetors that still fed fuel at extreme angles and the infamous starter handle for emergencies.

It was launched in 1970 as “a car for all reasons”. The Range Rover was also the first permanent 4x4 to do over 100mph whilst having a towing capacity of 3.5 metric tons, accommodation for five, hydraulic disc brakes to all wheels and the groundbreaking dual-range, permanent four-wheel drive gearbox.

A four-door version was introduced in 1981, with the two-door version phased out in 1994, it was then named the ‘Classic’ to differentiate from the all new P38a Range Rover.

The Car

It is with great excitement that we bring you this very fine 1996 Range Rover 5 door 300 TDI example with the later iteration of soft dash interior. There is a certain charm, character, and allure of a basic agriculturally specified 5 Door Range Rover fitted with a strong 300 TDI engine. I find they just make you smile, and it’s hard to not.

This particular vehicle was first registered on the 4th December 1996 in Malaga, Andalusia Region of the south of Spain. It’s an honest example of a really well-preserved vehicle, it’s been enthusiast-owned for a large proportion of its life. The vehicle currently resides in Barcelona, Spain, however, it can be shipped globally on request.

The truck was recently successfully ITV’d (Vehicle Inspection equivalent) in September 2020, which expires in May 2021 at 313,000 kilometers.

The vehicle has a very good exterior, no major dents or scratches anywhere on the vehicle. The car still supports its original glass, with no major chips or dents in the windscreen. All four bumper corners are still in good condition.

The paint is in very good condition on all sides of the truck with no major scuffs or imperfections. The roof is also in good condition.

From the photographs, the tires are in good condition with plenty of tread depth left on them.

Overall the interior presents excellently and has the beige ‘teddy bear’ interior. However, the boot or trunk has no spare wheel or boot trim with the vehicle. The window switches have stopped working, however, this is a very easy fix. Trim is generally complete, however, would benefit from several new speaker covers.

There is a small wiring gremlin with the indicator stalk and the milometer, they both stop working intermittently. We can work with a buyer of the vehicle to get these fixed in due course.

The 300 TDI engine is very strong, the power is delivered well through the rev range.

Goes in and out of all gear freely and without any issues. Clutch moves freely and is strong.

The car has resided in Spain for its entire life, therefore it is completely rust free, with no sign of any corrosion on the chassis or underside more generally. The footwells and sills again show no signs of rust and are solid throughout. It’s also evident they have never been repaired or replaced.
